New York, NY: A Conversation with Henning Mankell at the Scandanavia House
Thursday, April 10 2008, 5:30pm - 7:30pm

The New Press and the The American-Scandinavian Foundation are pleased to present Henning Mankell in conversation with Jeffrey Frank. They will discuss the popular explosion in Scandinavian mysteries, a genre with a long tradition of social critique and stylistic economy, among other topics.

Henning Mankell is Sweden’s most read author internationally and world-famous as the creator of the Kurt Wallander mystery series. His novels have been translated into thirty-seven languages with more than 30 million copies in print worldwide. Born in Stockholm and raised in Sveg, he is well known for his long association with Africa, his second home for more than thirty years. With his new novel The Eye of the Leopard, Mankell weaves together his two worlds—Sweden and Africa, First and Third, rich and poor—into a single, powerful narrative. His next installment in the Kurt Wallander series is The Pyramid—five short mysteries that will be published by The New Press in September 2008.

Jeffrey Frank, a senior editor at The New Yorker, is the author of the novels The Columnist, Bad Publicity, and, most recently, Trudy Hopedale (his “Washington trilogy”); and co-translator, with his Danish-born wife, Diana Crone Frank, of The Stories of Hans Christian Andersen: A New Translation from the Danish.

The discussion will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.
