Friday, January 6, 2017

We are very proud that Ava DuVernay’s Academy Awardnominated documentary 13th features six New Press authors and their books—Michelle Alexander (The New Jim Crow), James Kilgore (Understanding Mass Incarceration), Dolores Canales and Shaka Senghor (Hell Is a Very Small Place), The Ferguson Report, and Marc Mauer (Race to Incarcerate), as well as Khalil Muhammad and Angela Davis, who are both featured in The New Press’s recently published photo book Black Power 50.

For twenty-five years, The New Press has been the preeminent publisher of outstanding nonfiction criminal justice titles that reframe issues and ideas—from the criminalization of poverty to mass incarceration; from the school-to-prison pipeline to the prison industrial complex—for audiences nationwide. We strongly support the need for criminal justice reform as presented in 13th and our bestselling and notable criminal justice titles. Today, we extend our congratulations to director Ava DuVernay and the cast and crew of this important and acclaimed documentary, on their Academy Award nomination
